A very intense opening south today brought some interesting results. TV7 Tunisia puts out a spur on 56.75MHz which is a mix of audio and video, both can be resolved at once! TLA on IA also puts out a spur on 58.25MHz, this one sounds like strong vision buzz and the picture looks like smeary inverted video. The band finally closed at 2100z when Tunisia on E4 and IA RAI from Sicily faded out. The most intriguing signal was during the high MUF into North Africa, across 52MHz was some form of data that could only be heard in wide FM, I've recorded some while watching Portugal, a short video can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXTgO4XHllw

A couple of interesting catches today, I was surprised how strong and clear 1TV on R1 was, colour and nearly noise free after a 40dB notch! It was a 0 offset on 000 but the carrier had a regular slight chirp to it, is this St Petersburg?
Thank Janpeter for the information on Lad TV, I logged the carrier last year but it wasn't strong enough to see video from, amazing it was only 200W as it peaked at S9 on the Icom. I took some stills but it's amazing how poor the results are after being used to a capture card and noise reduction! Fortunately it was enough to ID it from Lyngsat and John Märsylä captured a real nice copy of it. Not sure what it is doing on such a high frequency though, 59.261.69x.

During the afternoon we had non stop Es on FM to North Africa, the signals from TVE and RTP were strong and stable enough to watch on our domestic flatscreen TV in the front room (that just happens to have all the B1 channels programmed in :) ) complete with colour and audio. I came across a narrowband FM signal on 45.025Mhz using a 151.4Hz subtone, the language would seem to be French with some Arabic and heavily accented, I've linked to a clip to see if anyone can maybe work out what is being said, it could be a useful propagation indicator if the location can be narrowed down, we assume it is MRC or ALG.

Between 1057 and 1130 I logged a number of different B3 carriers via Es,
all were on the Moroccan channels, M5 and M6, the strongest on
179.250.77 peaked at S5 on the Icom.

Highlight of the day were the African signals. Firstly Cameroon on E2
with French audio peaking S8 at times and for the first time in video,
Equatorial Guinea on E4, the carrier is very odd sounding like a broad
band of noise centred around 62.249.2, my thanks to Hugh in Portugal for
the station ID.

During the opening I logged another carrier on E4, 62.247.9xx. possibly
African.
TV7 Tunisia was back on air today after a period of being off air, when it returned it airing a blank carrier for most of the day but was back to normal during the evening.
This is the Italian IA signal on the low offset, another poorly
modulated TX.

During the opening there where various unid carriers not seen before on
IA including a reasonably strong one on 53.764.x. Since then Hasse
Mattisson in Sweden has reported seeing another shopping channel on IA
with a white X logo in trc. Other carriers heard were on E3 55.251.8
while other middle east signals could be seen and on E4 62.240.45 just
after RTL Klub which I think could be ORF1.

B1 didn't completely close overnight, at midnight local I was still
watching TLC Monte Vesuvius below IC and this is a Spectrum Lab
recording of channel IA, rx frequency 53.749MHz.

At 1103 I received the American forces Radio Network on 48.500MHz IDing
as AFN The Eagle, presumably this is another STL as there is a
pronounced 150Hz tone on the transmission.

The RAI Uno logging at 1124 is worth a mention because it is on a very
low offset of 53.737.52x
For over an hour this morning, Canadian TV was heard and very briefly
seen on A2 with further carriers on A3, sadly a very strong RTP Portugal
on E3 stopped me seeing any detail.
Another unusual signal is on 42.771MHz, it is an AM carrier with a
number of audio tones on it. I've been logging it for a few days now, on
the TV it appears visually similar to watching two signals causing CCI
as the audio notes beat together. I'm sure it's coming from Italy, maybe
even Napoli but what it is exactly remains a mystery.

Yet another evening of multiple Caribbean carriers on A2 and 3 not quite
making it to video level.
Very strange conditions late afternoon, dead band apart from a very weak
Iran E2 8M and then Antenna Blu faded up, not very strong hence the poor
quality of this video and I wasn't quick enough to lock the signal. It
never reached a level that produced any visible picture on the
television. it normally takes intense Es and high MUF to receive Ablu.
Antenna Blu TV is located at Forte Begato, Genoa in northern Italy, it
only uses 80W so I was surprised to see it yesterday, normally it takes
a strong opening before I receive it and then it is buried under TLA or
RAI on E2. Although difficult to tell from the video the logo is white
text in the upper left corner.

An update on the Arabic PMR as I have a translation for it now, it is Moroccan Arabic, southern accents (though that doesn't necessarily mean too much). Talk of '3 in sports clothes and one in military clothing'. She thinks either police or military so definitely a slot worth looking at more often. Since then I received this for two hours yesterday (1/7) so I've edited it down and sent it to my contact to see if we can narrow it down further.

During the afternoon we had non stop Es on FM to North Africa, the signals from TVE and RTP were strong and stable enough to watch on our domestic flatscreen TV in the front room (that just happens to have all the B1 channels programmed in :) ) complete with colour and audio. I came across a narrowband FM signal on 45.025Mhz using a 151.4Hz subtone, the language would seem to be French with some Arabic and heavily accented, I've linked to a clip to see if anyone can maybe work out what is being said, it could be a useful propagation indicator if the location can be narrowed down, we assume it is MRC or ALG.

Between 1057 and 1130 I logged a number of different B3 carriers via Es,
all were on the Moroccan channels, M5 and M6, the strongest on
179.250.77 peaked at S5 on the Icom.

Highlight of the day were the African signals. Firstly Cameroon on E2
with French audio peaking S8 at times and for the first time in video,
Equatorial Guinea on E4, the carrier is very odd sounding like a broad
band of noise centred around 62.249.2, my thanks to Hugh in Portugal for
the station ID.

African.
TV7 Tunisia was back on air today after a period of being off air, when it returned it airing a blank carrier for most of the day but was back to normal during the evening.
This is the Italian IA signal on the low offset, another poorly
modulated TX.

During the opening there where various unid carriers not seen before on
IA including a reasonably strong one on 53.764.x. Since then Hasse
Mattisson in Sweden has reported seeing another shopping channel on IA
with a white X logo in trc. Other carriers heard were on E3 55.251.8
while other middle east signals could be seen and on E4 62.240.45 just
after RTL Klub which I think could be ORF1.

B1 didn't completely close overnight, at midnight local I was still
watching TLC Monte Vesuvius below IC and this is a Spectrum Lab
recording of channel IA, rx frequency 53.749MHz.

At 1103 I received the American forces Radio Network on 48.500MHz IDing
as AFN The Eagle, presumably this is another STL as there is a
pronounced 150Hz tone on the transmission.

The RAI Uno logging at 1124 is worth a mention because it is on a very
low offset of 53.737.52x
For over an hour this morning, Canadian TV was heard and very briefly
seen on A2 with further carriers on A3, sadly a very strong RTP Portugal
on E3 stopped me seeing any detail.
Another unusual signal is on 42.771MHz, it is an AM carrier with a
number of audio tones on it. I've been logging it for a few days now, on
the TV it appears visually similar to watching two signals causing CCI
as the audio notes beat together. I'm sure it's coming from Italy, maybe
even Napoli but what it is exactly remains a mystery.

Yet another evening of multiple Caribbean carriers on A2 and 3 not quite
making it to video level.
Very strange conditions late afternoon, dead band apart from a very weak
Iran E2 8M and then Antenna Blu faded up, not very strong hence the poor
quality of this video and I wasn't quick enough to lock the signal. It
never reached a level that produced any visible picture on the
television. it normally takes intense Es and high MUF to receive Ablu.
Antenna Blu TV is located at Forte Begato, Genoa in northern Italy, it
only uses 80W so I was surprised to see it yesterday, normally it takes
a strong opening before I receive it and then it is buried under TLA or
RAI on E2. Although difficult to tell from the video the logo is white
text in the upper left corner.

An update on the Arabic PMR as I have a translation for it now, it is Moroccan Arabic, southern accents (though that doesn't necessarily mean too much). Talk of '3 in sports clothes and one in military clothing'. She thinks either police or military so definitely a slot worth looking at more often. Since then I received this for two hours yesterday (1/7) so I've edited it down and sent it to my contact to see if we can narrow it down further.
